How to Stay Safe in a Tornado

Volatile and sometimes extreme weather is a part of life in Oklahoma. We prefer to keep a close eye on weather forecasts, create safety plans and choose the perfect location for our storm shelter. With the threat of tornadoes and other violent weather, what are we doing to protect our loved ones? Are we able to do better?

Tornadoes are violent. Like lethal bombs, they can totally smash well-made buildings, uproot trees and hurl objects through the air. Although extreme tornadoes are most prevalent in the Great Plains, they can occur anywhere. Don’t take the chance! Learn how to keep your loved ones safe.

You need to take cover immediately if a tornado has been detected by weather radar. Of course, as a tornado threatens, the best place to be is in an underground tornado shelter. But if you can't get to a basement or specially-built shelter, you need to find more accessible alternative options to keep yourself and your family safe.

If you are at home,

Immediately go to your basement, cellar, or storm shelter. If you don’t have access to any of those options, get to the lowest level of your home.

  • Get to a space with a windowless interior, such as a shower, closet or internal hallway.

  • Keep as far away as possible from any windows. Shelter in the middle of the room as corners tend to attract debris.

  • Get under a solid piece of furniture, such as a heavy table or desk.

  • If possible, cover your head and neck with a blanket.

If you are in a mobile home,

Mobile homes are in particular danger from tornadoes and can be overturned easily. If you are in a mobile home and a tornado is near, evacuate immediately.

  • Take refuge in a house with a stable base.

  • If alternative shelter is not accessible, lie a safe distance from the mobile home in a low-lying field.

  • Use your arms to shield your neck and ears.

  • If you are at school or work,

  • Go to the basement, the lowest accessible level or to an inner hallway.

  • Avoid buildings with wide rooftops such as auditoriums, cafeterias, gyms, long hallways or shopping malls.

  • Get under a solid piece of furniture, such as; hang on to a heavy table or desk.

  • If possible, cover your head and neck with a blanket.

When you're outside,

  • Get inside a building if possible.

  • Use your arms to cover your head and body.

  • Keep informed about the potential for flooding.

When you're in a car,

  • Never attempt to outrun a storm. Tornadoes can easily change course and can easily lift and throw a car, truck or any other vehicle through the air.

  • Immediately exit the vehicle and take refuge in a nearby building.

  • If a building is not available, lie in a ditch or low-lying area away from the vehicle.

  • Use your arms to cover your head and body.

  • Stay informed about the potential for flooding.

Remember in all cases, make sure you have an NOAA weather warning radio in your shelter along with other recommended emergency supplies.
